Why Plexiglass Is the Right Material for the Right Applications
Glass is the default choice for most commercial glazing applications, and for good reason. It is optically superior, scratch-resistant, and performs well across a wide range of environmental conditions. But there are specific applications where glass is not the right answer, and trying to use it anyway creates problems that Plexiglass would have avoided. Understanding which applications those are, and why, is the starting point for specifying the right material.
Impact resistance is the most common driver. In environments where accidental breakage is a realistic risk, where vandalism is a concern, or where a broken panel creates a safety hazard that cannot be tolerated, Plexiglass offers better impact resistance than standard glass. It does not shatter into sharp fragments on impact the way glass does, making it the preferred choice for machine guards, protective barriers, sneeze guards, display cases in high-traffic areas, and any application where public safety around the glazing material is a consideration.
Weight is the second factor. Plexiglass weighs approximately half what an equivalent glass panel does, which matters significantly for overhead applications, suspended display elements, portable barriers, and any installation where the supporting structure has weight limitations that glass would exceed. It is also easier to handle and install in confined or elevated locations where the weight and fragility of glass create practical challenges.
